NEWARK, N.J. — A former acting president of the Long Island Rail Road has been appointed to lead New Jersey Transit’s rail operations.
NJ Transit’s board approved Friday the appointment of Raymond Kenny.
Kenny has nearly 50 years’ experience in the rail business, beginning as a ticket taker for the LIRR in 1970. He has consulted on rail projects around the country.
Kenny inherits a rail system that has been the source of criticism over the last several years for safety and reliability issues.
The agency recently met a federal deadline to receive an extension for a mandated emergency braking system but was forced to cut service over several months to do so, angering customers.
NJ Transit is the nation’s largest statewide transportation system with nearly 270 million passenger trips each year.
