Progress Through Unity

Happy New Years!!

I would like to wish a Happy New Years to all the sisters and brothers of Local 60.  I hope everyone took this time to spend and share with your family and friends. I also ask for all of us to reflect on the one’s all of us have lost this past years.  The year 2019 was a difficult year for some of our brothers and sisters.  Many of our members lost parents, children, siblings, and obviously brother and sisters of Smart-TD Local 60.  These unfortunate, but inevitable deaths should help all of us understand tomorrow is not promised.  We should take this time to learn to love one another, and at the least respect one another.  Respect is a MUST!!

I ask all of our members to give the change and new direction of our local a chance.  Our local had been plagued with disfunction and division.  I would like to thank all the union officers for their dedication, hard work, and pride they put in everyday supporting the vision we believe our local should go in, and what the members of Local 60 deserve and should expect.  With this great team the vision will come to fruition.

I would like to thank all the members of Smart-TD Local 60 for the dedication, handwork, pride, professionalism, and respect they display everyday when performing their duties day after day, regardless of the circumstance.  Without our members nothing is possible.

Lets collectively make the year 2020 better for our families, for our friends and for our brothers and sisters of Smart-TD Local 60.  With our members unified anything is possible, if we’re divided failure is the future and that would be unacceptable.  As ONE we’ll get it done!

Fraternally,

Jerome

Brother Jermaine Jenkins/Memorial Services

Brothers and Sisters:

I’m sure most people are aware of the passing of our brother Jermaine “Coach” Jenkins. It is with a heavy heart that I lay out the details of his services for his untimely and undeserved passing.

I would like to just share a few sentiments please. It’s imperative now, more than ever that we as a membership, as brother and sisters understand that life is not guaranteed to any of us. We must show, at a minimum respect for one another. Now is the time to unite! Brother Jenkins passing tells us if he could go any of us can go. He was and will always be a brother that would do anything for anyone. As a Local Vice President and Vice Local Chairman he protected our members and non members to the best of his abilities. His smile will never be forgotten, and his respect and love for our craft and everyone that belong’s to it can’t be questioned. He was a champion for what is right, and never had a problem to tell you when he thought you were wrong, but advice always came with it. Brother Jenkins was a great family man, and a spiritual man. His mark will be left on this union, this property forever!

I love my brother and will miss him dearly, I’m sure all of you will as well.

I would like to thank VP Ray Kenny for the letter sent out to our members regarding this untimely passing. I would also like to thank the Carrier for respecting and understanding this tragic loss affects our members and many more.

NJ Transit will be providing bus/shuttle services from Hamilton Train Station to the memorial.

Members should consider carpooling as well.

Happy Holiday

Brothers and Sisters:

I would like to wish everyone a great and safe holiday spent with family and friends. To all of our brothers and sisters that have to work this day, I thank you for your dedication and professionalism. While most 9-5 jobs have all holidays and weekends off and can spend all of them with their families, our members show up for work and complete the task at hand.

Have a great day, and thank you for all you do!

Clearing Car Protocol

Brother and Sisters:

I would like all members to follow the protocol attached regarding clearing cars at your final destination. For years your officers have tried to get the carrier to put a procedure in place for clearing cars to no avail. Despite the fact there isn’t a procedure put in place, our members are always the one’s disciplined. The TRO-12 states you must clear your trains, and regardless if someone was hiding in the bathroom, fell asleep below the seats etc, our members are still penalized. Your officers are the one’s that have to defend you in these cases, without much success. Our members have over 100 safety incidents related to passengers in unauthorized areas, these include unknown incidents. We want to eliminate this problem for our members and be proactive. We expect everyone to follow these procedures, it covers single and multi-level cars. The members need to understand, this is of upmost importance. The Carrier deems this a inconvenience to the customer (which is a rule violation), not including possible damage to equipment for windows being kicked out, police being called etc. We have rules and regulations to adhere to, so lets do as much. The procedure prescribed below is universal to everyone, and every division. When your at your final destination a members concern should be assisting the riding public and clearing your trains properly. Conductors, make sure you have a proper and thorough job briefing so all parties are on the same page. This is discipline we can eliminate easily by following these procedures. If the dispatcher has a concern, make sure you make them aware your clearing your cars out properly per rule.

Fraternally,

Jerome

Operating Doors Criteria

Brothers and Sisters:

I would like to remind our members how important our craft is. Please respect our duties, and take them seriously. Responsibility always fall on our members, lets stay prepared and remain professional. Please read the rule regarding door operations. I implore that all members follow this rule to the fullest.

2.1.4 Station Stops:

At station stops, only doors on the platform side and which are within the platform or designated boarding area will be open to board and detrain customers, except as provided by 2.1.3. Doors must not be opened until the train comes to a stop. The crewmember responsible for operating the doors will operate the local door first and ensure that all doors that are to be opened are on the platform before opening the rest of the doors on the train.

Please adhere to strictly.

Thank You

Blue Signal/Flag Protection

Brothers and Sisters: I would like all members to be aware of the seriousness of Blue Signal/Flag Protection. Our members cannot remove Blue Signal/Flags from tracks or equipment. If a member encounters a Blue Signal/Flag on their equipment when attempting to make move they, “MUST” call the Yardmaster and/or the Mechanical Department before any movement is made. Our members may encounter a Blue Signal/Flag in the window of a Cab Car or in the Locomotive Cab which may not be illuminated. This is still a Operational Blue Signal/Flag do not remove, and call the Yardmaster and/or the Mechanical Department. The Blue Signal/Flag can only be removed by the person who puts the Blue Signal/Flag up, a person in the same craft, or group who is in constant communication with one another. If you have any questions whether equipment or a track is Blue Flagged, don’t guess, please call the Yardmaster, and/or the Mechanical Department. Please see attached Power Point on Blue Signal/Flag Protection. Any questions never hesitate to call me, or your Local Union Officer. Thank You
