ATTENTION EMPLOYEES:

Today, we would like to remind you of the critical importance of getting vaccinated – for your health and the heath of others, including your fellow employees.

In the words of Governor Murphy, “Vaccines work. They are proving more than 99.9% effective in preventing people from contracting the virus, 99.99% effective in keeping people out of the hospital, and 99.999% effective in keeping people alive.” Please see the following articles:

Colleagues –

As we approach the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we would like to pay tribute to all the NJ TRANSIT employees who played a role on that day and the days that followed. One of the ways we would like to do this is by compiling video tributes featuring your personal reflections, which we can share on our social media channels.

Many of us have stories to tell. Where you were, what you were doing and how you responded when our nation and our customers faced such a tragic event. Whether you responded to Ground Zero, helped to evacuate customers with care and comfort, supported the arrival of evacuees at Hoboken Terminal, transported emergency responders or supplies, planned alternative service or more, your actions demonstrated our resolve to rise to the occasion under extremely difficult circumstances and helped NJ TRANSIT and the region respond to and recover from this tragic event.

We also want to hear from current employees who may not have been working at NJ TRANSIT on 9/11, but have a personal experience to share about that day.

There are two ways you can participate:

  1. If you would like to film yourself, simply record a message (up to 1 minute long) using your phone or other video camera and tell us your story. Be sure to include:
    1. Your name

    2. Your current job title or if you are a retiree

    3. Your job title on 9/11/2001

  2.  If you would like assistance filming, send an email to njtphoto@njtransit.com to schedule a time for our team to come record you.

If you need help deciding what to say in your recording, here are some questions you may choose to answer:

For NJ TRANSIT employees on 9/11

  • State your name and tell us where you were working as an NJ TRANSIT employee at the time.
  • What did you specifically do to support NJ TRANSIT on that day or the days that followed?
  • What motivated you to respond the way that you did?
  • Please feel free to share any other personal stories related to 9/11 and how it affected you.

For colleagues who were not working for NJ TRANSIT on 9/11:

  • State your name and tell us where you were working at the time or where you were that morning as the tragic events unfolded.
  • If you provided any support through your employer or through your community, please share what you did and what motivated you to respond.
  • Please feel free to share any other personal stories related to 9/11 and how it affected you.

Finally, if you have any photos of yourself when you were performing any of this work, please feel free to send us the pictures for possible use in the video tribute.

Please send your videos and photos to njtphoto@njtransit.com by 8/20/21.

Thank you for all you did on 9/11 and thank you in advance for sharing your stories with us!

Employee Message from President & CEO Kevin Corbett – June 17, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

Almost exactly a year ago today, I shared my first thoughts on Juneteenth; a day that acknowledges the actual end of slavery in America. At that time, as we all grappled with the tragic death of George Floyd, I mentioned how recent events made very clear that, although slavery ended 155 (now 156) years ago, racism and inequality remain. Unfortunately, we have yet to fully heal the racial divide in this country.

A year later, though the challenges I reflected on remain, I am encouraged that across the nation many individuals, groups, communities and even states began to look inward for what they can do to recognize the inequalities that persist in our country, and advance equity for all. Now, for the first time in the State of New Jersey and NJ TRANSIT, we are observing Juneteenth as an official holiday. While some may say a holiday is merely symbolic, symbols are often what defines us to the outside world.

Juneteenth is not just about acknowledging the past, but also the present. As Governor Murphy said when signing the bill making Juneteenth a holiday into law, “Every Juneteenth, we will celebrate the end of the physical chains which once held Black Americans down. While more work lies ahead to undo the oppression that remains, Juneteenth is an important marker that reminds us of our mission to create a society that enables our Black communities to achieve the full equality which they deserve.”

Here at NJ TRANSIT, we too have answered that call through our NJT2030 Diversity and Inclusion initiative, which asks what can we do to be a more welcoming, safe, supportive, and responsive organization for not only our Black customers, business partners, community partners and employees, but all the diverse communities and groups present in our great state. In the year since my last message, we have launched Company Employee Resource Groups (CERG) so that we as employees can teach, learn, and grow in this effort together. Our pilot CERG was our Black and African American CERG, and this year they are leading the first of what I know will be many Juneteenth observances to come.

When I look back at all the remarkable progress and accomplishments we have achieved over the last three years, I am encouraged because I am confident that we here at NJ TRANSIT have the collective will to continuously move forward. I believe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., said it best – Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.

May we all take time tomorrow to reflect on the lessons of the past, celebrate what progress we have made, and commit to what we will do to ensure equity exists for all.

Warmly,

Kevin
