Communication of Daily COVID-19 Positive Employees

Alternate text

ATTENTION EMPLOYEES

Beginning Monday, October 18th – and as per guidance from the State – NJ TRANSIT will begin sending daily notifications to all employees to report the number of employees who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, after reporting to their worksite in the 14 days preceding their receipt of a positive test result.

We will also include the work locations of these employees, although rest assured: These notifications will never include any identifying personal information, as mandated by HIPAA privacy laws and our own commitment to privacy.

In advance of receiving these notifications, you should know that NJ TRANSIT has made extraordinary progress keeping this virus at bay. We currently have 42 positive cases, down from a high of 299 positive cases on April 27th, 2020. During the worst days of the pandemic, we would often record 25 or more positive cases every day. Today, that number is almost always in the single digits. In short, your attention to following the recommended PPE and social distancing guidelines – along with the many safety measures and protocols we have put in place – is working.

We have also benefited from widescale vaccination among our employees. Thanks to all of you, we were able to administer more than 3,200 vaccine doses to employees at our Camden and Maplewood clinics – fully vaccinating more than 1,600 employees.
That’s in addition to the approximately 1,800 vaccine doses that were administered to NJT employees as well as NJDOT, Turnpike and Port Authority employees, with the help of many of you through our partnership with Walgreen’s back in April. In all, NJ TRANSIT provided thousands of vaccinations directly, and provided opportunities for thousands more to secure appointments across the state.

This work has contributed significantly to the State’s aggressive vaccination efforts. Just last week, Governor Murphy announced that more than 75 percent of eligible New Jersey residents are now vaccinated against COVID-19. New Jersey is only one of seven states in the nation to reach this milestone.

Please know how much we appreciate your efforts to keep our customers and your fellow employees safe. Thank you.

UPDATE to Weekly COVID-19 Testing Process

Alternate text

ATTENTION EMPLOYEES

NJ TRANSIT has not yet finalized the COVID-19 testing process for employees who are not yet fully vaccinated.

As a result, employees who have not provided proof of being fully vaccinated will not need to be tested on Monday, October 18th and immediately thereafter.

Before we implement any testing process, we will discuss the proposed process with agreement and non-agreement leadership, and then let employees know all details of how the testing process is going to work.

For those employees who are fully vaccinated, please continue to submit proof of vaccinations to COVIDVAXProof@njtransit.com. Please include your first and last name and employee ID number in the subject line of your email, and send the email from your @NJTRANSIT address.

Employees who are not yet vaccinated can make an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccination with NJT Medical Services or find a provider through NJ COVID-19 Vaccine Finder at https://covid19.nj.gov/pages/finder.

Thank you.

Rescheduling Of Special Meeting

Good afternoon all.

Due to the USPS slower delivery the meeting on Thursday the 21st is now moved to Tuesday the 26th at 9am Linden VFW.  This gives members an extra 5 days to get their ballots in.  The Smart Constitution Article 21B Sections 57 and 85 both stated polling has to be done by mail referendum, ballots cannot be turned in by members at the polling place.  I spoke to the international and there isn’t any exceptions.

Employee Message from President & CEO Kevin Corbett – October 13, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

Yesterday the NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors approved an historic construction award to Skanska Traylor PNB Joint Venture in the amount of $1,559,993,000 for our Portal North Bridge Replacement Project – the single largest construction contract award in our agency’s history! The new Portal North Bridge will span nearly three miles of the Northeast Corridor, and includes the construction of retaining walls, deep foundations, concrete piers, structural steel bridge spans, rail systems, and demolition of the existing bridge.

This is a proud moment for all of us. It represents the culmination of more than three years of hard work and determination by NJ TRANSIT and our project partners at Amtrak. It also means that very soon, we will begin construction on a project of national significance – creating jobs and spurring economic growth for our region, and restoring dependable rail service to the millions of customers who count on this critical link between New Jersey and New York every year.

For a project of this magnitude – spanning so many different departments, including Capital Programs, Procurement, Finance, Operations, Office of Business Development and many others – it would be impossible for me to individually thank every employee who directly contributed to our success. I would, however, like to offer my sincere gratitude to every NJ TRANSIT employee, because this project is truly an organization-wide effort, and we all deserve to feel a sense of accomplishment today. This project will not only create approximately 15,000 jobs and add billions of dollars to our economy, but it will vastly improve the experience for all our customers commuting between New Jersey and New York, along with Amtrak’s customers between Washington, D.C. and Boston, for generations to come

Once again, thank you all for your efforts to turn the vision we had for this critical infrastructure project into a reality.

Warmly,

Kevin

Vaccination/Testing

To all- I want to give you an update on the latest vaccine and testing protocols. As you know, all employees are required to either be vaccinated (and show proof of their vaccination status) or be subject to testing.

Employees who are vaccinated should  forward a copy of their vaccine card to Covidvaxproof@njtransit.com
Employees must provide their name and employee number on the subject line of the email. Once received, the employee will receive a confirmation via email. Vaccination cards should be submitted by Monday, October 18, 2021.

Given the complexity of developing a test procedure for a railroad environment, we have not finalized the scope and nature of the testing process.  As soon as a testing procedure is developed, we will  share it with you and answer questions you may have.

We appreciate your patience as this process is developed.

Infrastructure Actions

This month is critical for infrastructure. Congress continues to debate the size and scope of the reconciliation bill and are aiming to pass the infrastructure package (reconciliation and the bipartisan bill) by the end of October. There is intense debate over the size of the reconciliation bill and it will likely be cut down significantly from $3.5 trillion to somewhere in the ballpark of $2 trillion. This means our priorities could be on the chopping block. We can’t let this happen.

We want to keep the pressure up on every member of Congress to pass both bills and make sure they include SMART priorities. The AFL-CIO is asking every state federation and central labor council to meet with every member of Congress over the next week to share this message—pass both bills with all of labor’s priorities.

SMART Army request: We are asking the SMART Army to take the same action as the AFL-CIO. Over the next week, meet with every member of Congress in your area.  Ask them to pass both bills and include SMART priorities.

SMART’s four primary asks for infrastructure:

  • Apply strong labor standards to any infrastructure project receiving federal support.
  • Provide at least $100 billion for school construction.
  • Include PRO Act provisions.
  • Strengthen rail and transit safety provisions (such as those incorporated into the House’s INVEST Act).

SMART’s overall message:

  • Our position has been and continues to be—we need both bills as quickly as possible!
  • Both bills have important priorities for SMART and we want to see both passed and all of our priorities included.
  • We want to continue to leave the negotiation of how this is sequenced and gets done to the party but want to make sure we let members of Congress know that we want both bills and that we want our priorities included.
  • It is critical that all SMART locals stick to this message. We are stronger speaking with a unified message.

Links and attached Materials:

  • Spreadsheet of targets: The spreadsheet of all members of Congress is here. You can use the spreadsheet to find where members stand on our priorities and if they serve on key committees.
  • Key MOC messages document: This word document is a “cheat sheet” so you can tailor the message based on the position of the member and what they’ve done on our priorities to date.
  • Toolkit: The toolkit provides an overview of infrastructure, a link to an action alert, text link, sample social media posts, sample letters to the editor and a script for member videos.
  • Telephone TPs: This document provides an overview of our top asks and points members can use when calling and/or talking to members at town hall events.
  • Infrastructure-rail safety talking points: This document provides talking points on rail safety.
  • Town Hall spreadsheet: This link provides an up-to-date overview of town hall events by state and district.
  • Breakdown of infrastructure package: This document outlines the provisions of the bipartisan infrastructure bill and reconciliation that benefit SMART members. It is important that we continue to urge Congress to pass both right away because both have critical provisions, and we want all of it!
  • Biden accomplishments: This podcast breaks down Biden’s first 100 days in office and how it benefits labor. Page 3 and 24-30 in the latest issue of the SMART Journal outline a timeline of Biden’s accomplishments for labor.
