How to Vote
Voting method to be confirmed. Local 60 is considering conducting this election by mail ballot. Final voting procedures will be announced prior to the October nomination meeting. The information below reflects how a mail ballot election would work under SMART Constitution Article 21B, Section 57 — do not rely on it as confirmed procedure.

If conducted by mail ballot, here’s what to expect:

  • Your ballot will be mailed to your home address on file with the Local Secretary at least 15 days before the tabulation date.
  • The ballot will arrive in a mailing envelope containing an inner “A” envelope and a return envelope.
  • Mark your ballot, seal it in the inner “A” envelope, place it in the return envelope, and mail it back.
  • Ballots must be received — not just postmarked — by the tabulation deadline. Mail early.
  • If you do not receive a ballot, contact the Local Secretary immediately: Marc F. Sussman.
  • To be eligible to vote, all dues and assessments must be paid in advance, before the first day of the month in which they are due (Article 21B, Section 49).
Update your address now. Your ballot goes to the address on record. If you’ve moved and haven’t updated your address, you will not receive a ballot. Contact Local Secretary Marc F. Sussman or update your address directly at smart-union.org/td.

Running for Office

Any active member in good standing is eligible to run for Local office. Here’s what you need to know:

Who is eligible to run? Any member in good standing. Dues must be current per Article 21B, Section 49. The LMRDA guarantees every member in good standing the right to nominate candidates, run for office, and vote by secret ballot.
How do I get nominated? Nominations are taken from the floor at the October nomination meeting. No seconding is required. You may self-nominate. If you can’t attend, submit a nomination petition signed by at least 5 members in good standing, stating the position you seek.
Can I run for more than one office? No. No member may be nominated for or elected to more than one office or position in the Local.
What if I’m nominated but not present at the meeting? If you are nominated but not present, you will be dropped from the list of nominees unless you notify the Secretary within 5 days that you accept the nomination.
What if only one person is nominated for a position? If only one member is nominated for a position, that member may be declared elected by acclamation — no ballot needed.
Do I have the right to campaign? Yes. Under the LMRDA, every candidate has the right to distribute campaign literature to members. The Local must provide you access to the membership mailing list at your expense. You prepare the materials; the Local provides the addresses.
What about LCA positions? Only members with seniority in the craft represented by that LCA may nominate, be nominated for, or vote in that LCA election. Separate ballots are provided for each craft.
